“powder hounds, Irwin the Mischievous Kangaroo and Dave the Cat Go Boarding”
inspiration
Every year the LaPlata County Humane Society gives 20 artists used snowboards to create amazing art for auction to benefit the animals they care for. My contribution in 2026 includes 5 beloved critters taking to the terrain park at Purgatory Resort here in Durango.
technique
I built the terrain park on a primed snowboard with foil and covered with extra heavy gesso “snow” and Apoxy for the ramp and rail. Each of the snowboarders is made of Apoxy and painted with acrylic.
materials
Wire armature, Chavant oil based clay, bronze, patina, acrylic and a final coat of wax.

Gunner, a former resident of the Humane Society, was the inspiration for Pluto Catching Neptune, one of the sculptures of the Solar Installation along the Animas River Trail.
Irwin The Mischievous Kangaroo has spent some time at the shelter after escaping from his Durango home.
Dave the Cat has special needs. He can only eat food made of alligator! Anything else and he starts to fall apart. Hence he has only one ear. Lucky Dave calls the shelter his forever home, where he is much loved.
Frannie was on a walk with our friend Jane, who volunteers at the Humane Society, when Frannie met Pluto Catching Neptune just south of the shelter on the River Trail.
Winnie is one of our best friends. Her mom Nancy shares her with us. We’re in love!
